Photographers invited to summer parties….? Please weigh in!

by Shannon Rubsamen on June 8, 2010

Today’s dilemma – while I don’t believe I’m invited as a guest to random gatherings solely because I’m a photographer, I gotta wonder sometimes when people seem to expect it.

My problem is that I really can’t go anywhere without my camera and just LOVE taking pics.

Seriously, how do other pro photographers handle this one?  Do you charge the attendees (other than the birthday girl for example) for photos of themselves and family members even though you weren’t hired to shoot the party?  Do you leave your camera at home and miss the perfect shot?

PLEASE help a sister out!

I’d leave the camera in the car until I was sure. After that I’d take the shots, put them on a website with watermarks across the middle, and charge for prints.

So true… Bring your camera and don’t give photo’s away. Or tell them they are posted on this site andhave the site charge them for 1.00 for each picture. Not edits. Bet you can make some quick bucks.

I would leave the camera where you can get it if someone asks. Some people do not want their pictures taken. To those people, having a photographer running around the party looking for what they consider “perfect shots” is intrusive and annoying.

Good point Rocket thank you! I think I’ll do that although just last night I left my camera at home and my husband felt bad so he brought his just in case…. LOL!
