Yes, I finally got to go on my ride-a-long the Friday night before Easter. I have been remiss in my summation merely because I took a VACATION – something I have not done in what 10 months or more???
Did I mention my taxes? No one wants me to go there.
I would like to say first and foremost THANK YOU to my terrific partner that evening Kat Lobaugh! I could not have chosen a better educator to hang out with for 10 hours (that felt like 10 minutes). I gotta wonder if Sgt. “JJ” John J. Geluso wasn’t coached by Monk to put me with a woman JUST like me???? LMAO! Stop right there people with your worries about a mini me – this one is in MUCH better shape and knows how to safely use a weapon if necessary.
So, have you ever been riding with a cop? If not, it should definitely be on your list of things to do in this lifetime. Keep in mind though that the VA Beach police primarily ride solo and having a stranger in the car asking dumb questions, needing potty breaks and worrying about the lack of an “oh shit handle” in the car can be a distraction.
My partner was a pro! That woman takes multitasking to a whole new level. There was NEVER a time when she wasn’t doing something to earn our tax dollars and other than just being more aware of my surroundings in general, I now have the habit of looking for expired tags on cars.
When we weren’t responding to a call, we were driving around less fortunate areas of town to make sure our presence was known. At every traffic light she was on the computer running the tags on the car in front of us. Why? Cause you never know……
Can you call it “luck” that we stayed busy that night? Depends on your perspective I guess but I LOVED being on the move constantly and wondering what was about to come over the radio next. Since I have 10 hours of time to cover I will obviously be breaking it down into more than one blog. Tomorrow’s topic: What is an “EPO” and why you should not drive on a suspended license for medical reasons. Duh…….
