Charlie’s Redheaded Angel – Hot Red Dresses & Immigration Challenges

by Shannon Rubsamen on March 17, 2010

Last night, “Monk” had lined up a special treat for our group!  A trip to the VA Beach “Correctional Center”.  That means JAIL for any foreigners out there.

Accordingly, our group received an email last week about appropriate dress for our jail visit.   Just to cause a ruckus, Ted took a picture of me in a red dress wearing hot black pumps and red lipstick which I then posted on Monk’s facebook page as “what I was wearing”.  We wanted to see if Jeff would freak upon seeing it but unfortunately I did it too late to make our prank work.  (Before you ask, no, I will not post that photo here.)

Other than the jail itself, what was so interesting about last night?  We were greeted by the honorable Sheriff Kenneth Stolle!  A former Senator, policeman and Navy brat, Stolle has quite the reputation for achieving a consensus on important crime related issues among all political parties.  I wonder if he has an interest in Health Care Reform?

Stolle discussed his concerns with immigration violations in our fine city.  As it turns out, although illegal aliens are consistently reported to ICE upon arrest for the past year, ICE has refused to pick them up.   They must therefore be released back into society after serving their time.  Call me naive but that tidbit surprised me.

Our guess is that ICE is not adequately staffed to perform it’s job.  Guess why….  Yep!  Funding.  So just for fun, let’s say that ICE starts picking them up – did you know that a deportation hearing takes 18 months to complete even if uncontested?  I guess this means we would have to pay to house them in jail until the process is complete.  We are talking about 14,000 people in the state of VA at a cost of .99 cents per meal per day – you do the math.

After working in the legal realm myself, the one thing that was drilled into me over all those years was THOU SHALL NOT INSTITUTE A LAW THAT YOU CANNOT OR WILL NOT ENFORCE.  After all the press about this issue it just kills me.

Ok, I’m stepping down from my soap box and I’m sorry this post isn’t funny but did you learn something?

Tomorrow I’ll fill you in on the gory details of jail and prison life!
